What Is The Exam Structure of UPSC CSE Mains Paper?

As mentioned above UPSC conducts the civil services examination in three stages. Here we are going to discuss the second stage in the UPSC selection process which is the Mains paper. Read the points mentioned below and learn about UPSC CSE Mains 2022.

 

  • The Mains examination has 9 papers in total, the examination is conducted in 5-7 days.
  • The 9 papers involve 2 papers which are language papers and are qualifying in nature, 2 are optional subject papers, 1 is an essay paper and the further four are general studies papers.
  • The 9 papers in the mains stage is a descriptive stage, therefore it is very extensive as well as intensive. One needs to have a well-rounded strategy on how to go about bettering each of the subjects already studied and preparing the ones that are yet to be not even started hitherto.
  • The marks scored in the main examination directly affect the final scores, therefore, aspirants are required to be extra prepared for this phase.
  • Out of the 9 papers, two papers named papers A and B which are Compulsory Indian language (CIL) and English is qualifying in nature and one requires at least 25% marks in both. Only then the remaining papers would be considered for the merit list.
  • The languages in the CIL will be the ones included in the 8th schedule.
  • For all the papers, candidates are given 3 hours. Papers A and B are of 300 marks and the remaining papers will be 250 marks each.
  • This means the main exam will be for a total of 1750 marks.
  • Out of the 9 papers, two papers are optional, candidates have to choose one subject each for the two papers. The choice has to be made from the list of subjects decided by the commission.
